1.3 Statutory interpretation

 

  • Statutory interpretation, including the various approaches and rules of statutory interpretation including the literal rule, golden rule rule, mischief rule, purposive approach and the impact of the Human Rights Act 1998 and European law on statutory interpretation
  • The use of intrinsic aids including the short and long title, margin notes, headings and punctuation
  • The use of extrinsic aids including the Law Commission reports and Royal Commission reports
  • Study of the distinction between enforceable legal rules and principles
  • Study of criminal and civil law and the different sources of law
