There are different types of judges and important differences between superior judges and inferior judges.

This essay sets out the qualification, selection and appointment requirements needed in the case of judges.

The following general points are made:

  • the differences between superior and inferior judges;
  • mention of the different courts that they sit in;
  • the Courts and Legal Services Act 1990 which governs the qualifications required;
  • the one time monopoly of the Bar and widening the choice;
  • the relevant advocacy period.

The essay moves onto set out the requirements so far as qualification, selection and appointment for judges sitting in the various courts from Law Lords sitting in the former House of Lords to District Judges sitting in the Magistrates Courts.
